Markets
Sigma Designs' focus is to develop and market high-performance, highly-integrated System-on-a-Chip (SoC) semiconductors for consumer products. Although many of our products can be used in a wide range of applications, we are focused on six primary market segments.
IPTV
|
Delivering and/or distributing video over Internet Protocol (IP), known as IPTV, is a rapdily growing product category. IPTV set-top boxes receive compressed audio/video content from a broadband Internet connection (such as DSL or fiber), decode it and display it on a television. Additional features typically include Internet access and voice over IP (VoIP). The wide adoption of broadband Internet connectivity, the availability of advanced video codecs including MPEG-4.10 (H.264) and SMPTE 421M (VC-1), the availability of digital rights management (DRM) and the demand for alternative entertainment sources are enabling rapidly growing IPTV deployments. Telecommunication companies around the world desire to tap into the potential revenue streams created by offering video services over broadband. Building on our years of IPTV experience, we are a key SoC supplier into these IPTV solutions, offering an optimized feature set with scalable performance silicon and unique software. |

This next-generation high-definition media format supports high-definition video, using the MPEG-2, MPEG-4.10 (H.264) and SMPTE 421M (VC-1) video codecs, high-definition audio, advanced interactivity and networking. Building on our years of DVD experience, Sigma Designs rapidly enabled the Blu-ray player market by offering the first SoC capable of supporting Blu-ray playback. We are a key SoC supplier into Blu-ray players, offering an optimized feature set with scalable performance silicon, turn-key player reference design, wide 3rd party software support to enable differentiating features for player manufacturers, and the ability to integrate our VXP® video processing technology. |
|
HDTVs represent a substantial and rapidly growing product category, currently led by the US and Japan markets but rapidly increasing in other markets. Taking advantage of our media processor capabilities and VXP® video processing technology, we are pursuing the fast-growing LCD HDTV market segment, offering advanced display processing features that recreate the essence of cinema picture quality. |

Digital Media Adapters (DMAs) are a new product category for the home. Using a wired or wireless network, DMAs pull compressed audio/video content from a PC or media server, decode it and display it on a television. Most solutions are based on either DLNA or Microsoft Media Center Extender (MCX). DMA functionality is rapidly moving from stand-alone products to being embedded inside HDTVs, Blu-ray players, AV receivers, etc. We are a key SoC supplier into DMAs, offering an optimized feature set with scalable performance silicon and unique software. |
|
Portable Media Players (PMPs) are quickly becoming mainstream, enabling the enjoyment of movies, music and photos outside the home. Improvements in video compression technology, LCD display technology, wireless communications and small form-factor storage hold the promise for PMPs to quickly become the media-on-the-go equivalent of the cell phone. We are a key SoC supplier into PMPs, offering an optimized feature set with scalable performance silicon and unique software. |
